Augmentation mammoplasty is performed to enlarge small breasts, underdeveloped breasts, or breasts that have decreased in size after a woman has had children. It is accomplished by surgically inserting an implant behind each breast. If your breast skin sags as well, Dr. Martin may suggest having a breast lift in conjunction with augmentation. In the operation, an incision is made either under the breast, around the areola (the pink skin surrounding the nipple), or in the armpit. A pocket is created for the implant either behind the breast tissue or behind the muscle between the breast and the chest wall. There are several types of implants used today. Some contain silicone gel, saline (salt water) solution or a combination of both. The implant surface may be smooth, or textured depending on your individual needs. Afterwards, you will wear a gauze dressing for several days for support. Minimal swelling or discoloration will occur but will disappear shortly after surgery. Varying degrees of breast firmness can occur postoperatively; you will be instructed to perform breast massage exercises to help stretch the skin and achieve the final contour the breast during the initial post-operative period. Vigorous activities, such as jogging, aerobics, tennis, and heavy lifting, will be restricted for three weeks following surgery. Incisions will be made to keep scars as inconspicuous as possible, in the breast creast, around the nipple, or in the armpit. Breast tissue and skin is lifted to create a pocket for each implant. After surgery, breasts will be fuller and natural in tone and contour. Scars will fade with time but are permanent. |
